Worth it to reach out?
I don't have many alumni at this bank, but we do have a senior person in the ER department (think MD/Head). If I'm interested in only doing IB at the bank, is it still worth it to reach out to them? If I were able to get referred by them, would it still help in getting into the interview process? Or is it not worth it because it's completely separate from IB? Don't want to offend the person by saying I'm more interested in IB vs. ER
It wouldn't hurt. Just be honest about what you want.
I actually wouldn’t reach out. ER and banking are completely separate and he won’t have much sway in recruiting, and if anything he’d be offended that you’re trying to network with him to land in IB. It would be one thing if he was a close friend and didn’t mind helping you, but I think he’d interpret it the wrong way if you networked with him and then asked for a banking referral
