Year End Review

How are year end reviews structured? Mine is with the head of my group next week and I’m worried. I’m good at talking to seniors and stroking their ego without coming off like a kiss ass but never been in a situation where they are the ones talking to me. At my internship it was really informal just “you’re killing it keep it up what feedback do you have for us”. I’m at BB IB and a first year analyst. It’s a call given WFH but should I come prepared with things that I killed and some bs that I should get better at. I picked a MD that likes me and an analyst I worked under, both should be pretty good.

You should not worry about it, you don’t need to prepare anything. There are two parts. One is putting you in a bucket and explaining why you are there. This bucket will affect your bonus, most likely. The other part is reading some of the feedback your colleagues gave you, both the good and bad. They will also hand you a piece of paper with the actual feedback, your scores, how your scores compared to those of other ANL in your class, etc. What you should definitely NOT do is argue back or fight the feedback if you think it’s not accurate. If you want you can take the opportunity to talk about what you look forward in the new year, type of deals / sectors / etc. but don’t expect too much.
