Sound psychopathic but people tended to be more willing to follow up / go through with my ask if i mirrored them in conversation, maybe because I seemed easier to relate to. You’re upbeat and talking a mile a minute? I’m upbeat and talking a mile a minute. You’re monotone and sound like your one bad day from ending it all? I’m monotone and sounding like I’m one bad day from ending it all. Try it.

I think networking can be a bit of a psychological game, agree with comment above and mirroring has been a succesful strategy for me but at the same time its important to be authentic too. During one of my final SA interviews an ED even pointed out that he does not want a bunch of clones in his team and asked me to change my answer to a behavioural question to an honest one instead of one from the 100 IB questions.

Now having experienced the other side of the networking events as an analyst its easy to see who is just a yes-person agreeing with or repeating everything you say. So instead of saying you love the same sport / hobby you should just say you are athletic too / have your own twist on spending free time. This also helps avoiding awkward situations where people ask you detailed questions about your supposedly "shared interest" which you are unable to answer. If you do share interests ofcourse focus on those to establish a bond!

After the first coffee chat and once you’re on a second and more chill one. Something you wanna do to make the person you’re connecting with think of you better is sort of repeat everything they said towards the end of their response. If they end a sentence off after answering a question with a remark or comment, just try and respond with a rhetorical question that shows you were listening. Something like “wow there is no way that happened” or “I find the exact same thing happens in blah blah blah”.
