1st round interview anomaly
I recently had a first round interview with a BB for a sophomore summer intern program. I was referred to HR by a higher up.
After going through the interview, the interviewer told me that their sophomore program is used as a diversity tool and unless you're Hispanic, black, or female. You have a slim chance of getting an offer. I am not any of the those demographics.
Does this seem strange? Has anyone else heard a similar statement from a BB?
Edited for a mistake
They're programs out there targeted at minorities. For example, JP has the Launching Leaders program. I believe it's a 2 day visit to HQ for sophomores and a SA position for juniors. Goldman also has their Scholarship for Excellence, where all scholarship recipients receive a summer internship. Of course there are also programs aimed at women and the new recent push for banks to hire LGBT candidates.
So it's not a surprise the bank has a program like that. However, you probably won't receive the offer because you are not a minority/fall within their target category. I'd probably say it was an admin mistake.
