2:2 - How Screwed in the Future

Hi, would appreciate opinions from people who may know something about this.

Graduated from a UK target, have a couple internships - both in IBD at large top 20 global banks, but unfortunately didnt convert either and just stuck with the 2:2 now.

Will be taking a Big 4 audit offer for now, and assuming my last shot  at FT apps this cycle doesnt work, I'd be ideally looking to either lateral into ER after 4 yrs B4 work exp+ACA qual as a first choice. Or potentially trying my luck at a TAS transfer then recruiting for corp dev/IB/small PE in addition as well. Not too far out, but I am at a regional office so may be harder to network into TAS too.

One of my two IB internship offers at a top bank was an OC I landed even after the 2:2 on my app and I did  interviews for many other OCs  despite grade.

However, I did find that during the few times it was a grad HH who reached out to me such as DP, that my grade seemed to come up in the phone call and prevent me from progressing.

Therefore, as I know a lot of exp hire recruiting is done through similar recruiters, just wanted to know how much the grade could affect me after I get my qual + 3-5 yrs B4 exp - as I know lateralling out of audit will be competitive as is. Not all, but a few ACA exp hire posts specify a 2:1 as well.

If it would be a problem, are there ways to reach out to firms/hiring teams directly for exp hires that could help get around this somehow? (for OC recruiting, even 2:1 banks have passed me through screening when it was internal but never the recuiters who asked)

Or would my only hope be to start building a network at banks when I start my scheme to hopefully know when openings pop up and get around recruiters when the time comes?

Appreciate this is all a bit far in the future, but just rly anxious and would like to know now as if it will be rly impossible even after ACA, it may make sense for me to try harder for other options now like applying to a masters outside the UK and trying to compensate w GMAT(would prefer to avoid if possible tho)/applying for even small boutique IB internships even if conversion is v uncertain.

Last point, besides ER/the occasional L/S HF role or a TAS transfer, are there any other interesting exits or paths out of B4 audit - or do all the rest get stuck in internal audit/controlling/accounting/FP&A?

Sorry if I came across as elitist in any of this, but thanks a lot for reading!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Current Situation:

  • Graduated from a UK target school with a 2:2 degree.
  • Completed internships in IBD at top 20 global banks but did not convert them to full-time offers.
  • Accepted a Big 4 audit offer.

Future Plans:

  • Primary Goal: Lateral into Equity Research (ER) after 4 years of Big 4 work experience and obtaining ACA qualification.
  • Secondary Goal: Transfer to Transaction Advisory Services (TAS) and then recruit for corporate development, investment banking, or small private equity roles.

Concerns:

  1. Impact of 2:2 Degree on Future Opportunities:

    • Recruiters' Bias: Experience shows that recruiters often bring up the 2:2 grade, which can hinder progression.
    • Job Specifications: Some ACA experienced hire posts specify a 2:1 requirement.
  2. Networking and Direct Applications:

    • Internal vs. External Recruiters: Internal recruiters at banks have passed you through screening despite the 2:2, unlike external recruiters.
    • Building a Network: Starting to build a network at banks during your Big 4 tenure could help you know about openings and bypass recruiters.

Strategies:

  1. Networking:

    • Start Early: Begin networking as soon as you start your Big 4 role. Attend industry events, join relevant professional groups, and connect with alumni.
    • Leverage Internal Contacts: Use your internal contacts from previous internships to get insights and referrals.
  2. Direct Applications:

    • Target Firms Directly: Reach out to firms and hiring teams directly for experienced hire roles. This can sometimes bypass the grade filter used by external recruiters.
    • Highlight Experience: Emphasize your work experience, skills, and ACA qualification over your academic grade.
  3. Alternative Paths:

    • Masters Program: Consider applying for a master's program outside the UK to compensate for the 2:2 grade. A strong GMAT score can bolster your application.
    • Boutique IB Internships: Apply for internships at small boutique investment banks, even if conversion is uncertain. This can add valuable experience to your resume.

Exit Opportunities from Big 4 Audit:

  • Equity Research (ER)
  • Long/Short Hedge Fund (L/S HF) Roles
  • Transaction Advisory Services (TAS)
  • Corporate Development
  • Investment Banking (IB)
  • Small Private Equity (PE) Firms
  • Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
  • Internal Audit/Controlling/Accounting

Final Thoughts:

  • Stay Diligent: Focus on gaining as much relevant experience as possible during your Big 4 tenure.
  • Be Proactive: Actively seek out challenging projects and roles that align with your long-term goals.
  • Keep Options Open: While aiming for ER or TAS, be open to other interesting exit opportunities that may arise.

What type of a target? Oxbridge or LSE/Imperial? If Oxbridge, then I wouldn't worry. I have a 2:2, and know (few) others who do, and had no problems getting interviews/offers from MBBs, US BBs, and MF PE shops after graduating with the 2:2 clearly put on all the application forms (as long as your internships, extracurriculars, etc, are all good)
