A good internship or an internship with high chance of return offer?
Hi everyone,
I am an international student, a 3rd year undergrad going into a business school masters next year.
I received two summer intern offers: 1. a PE intern (alternatives asset - think BAIN, Brookfield, Oaktree) pros: nice culture and lean team, great experience at entry level; correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it is good for applying to IBD roles next year cons: low chances of turning it into a full time offer (as an international student I wish to have an offer that guarantees my visa); hard to break into buy side straight from graduate
- an investment internship programme (think Allianz, AXA, abrdn) pros: feeds into the graduate analyst rotational programme; internal mobility is good and can most likely choose where I wish to go into; buy side from the start cons: brand name not as good; might not get the team I want to; have to renege the other offer
Personally I wish to best go into private markets from the start, whether it’s at a BB or buy side firm. My major worry for the current internship is I have to go through IBD or recruitment all over again with no visa security.
Really need career advice at this point :)
Go buyside, if eventually you know that’s what you want to do. You’ll probably easily land a bank for ft
thanks, so you believe it would be easy for me to land a ft if I go for the PE intern?
Yes, assuming that you have what it takes to land the pe offer. Recruiting for FT w that on your belt also gives you an edge (might even land you another buyside offer)
