Advice about graduate school for investment banking.
I will be graduating from an average university this spring with degrees in political science and german. I am extremely interested in going into investment banking, but know that I don't really have the qualifications for it. I will be graduating with a 4.0 and have published two papers in distinguished academic journals (one was an analysis of hedge funds). I was initially planning on going to law school, but I have started to realize that I'm not particularly interested in being an attorney and would much rather pursue an MBA. I realize that the likelihood of me landing a job in investment banking with my current credentials isn't the greatest, so I was thinking about pursuing a MSc in international political economy from the London School of Economics to enhance my quantitative skills. I'm hoping that this can help me land a job at an investment bank and I can then work there for several years before going back and getting an MBA. Do you think this is a decent idea or would the MSc in international political economy not really enhance my prospects?
Just aim for a Masters of Finance in the US at a top school if you're eligible (ie have taken necessary pre-requisite courses) - this is if you're based in the US (assuming you may be because you're talking about getting an MBA as well as a Masters degree)
If in the UK, you could probably get something out of LSE in IB but it may be easier if you go for a more related degree to finance
Not many masters in finance make it into IB, your graduate degree should be an MBA. Based on your stats, after a few years of working experience you should get into a top 10 program.
