Advice needed for offer/interview situation

Guys,

Am in bit of a predicament, please offer some advice. I have recently been interviewing for small M&A and IB shops for both unpaid internships and full-time analyst positions. Last week I interviewed for 3 and this week someone put me in touch with a guy working for a the PWM group at a well known BB. I had an interview with him and he told me that I can come in on Monday and start a trial period before I actually take a paid internship, provided I do well.

The other people from the M&A boutique got back to me this week and invited me for a final round with an MD at their firm on Friday, then they switched it to Monday at 2pm... same day I'm supposed to start this trial thing for the PWM guy. What should I do? how do I squeeze the interview in without screwing both of them up. I can't just leave on my first day and say: "Hey, I'm going to another interview, be back in two hours."

If I get the M&A full time, I'd get paid well for this econ environment and would get a lot of exposure to the deals they do since they work with clients from a variety of different business industries. The trial at the PWM place is not guaranteed to turn into an internship but if it does, it would also be paid, albeit intern pay, not full-time.

Any advice would be much appreciated about how I could turn this into my favor, I want to go through with the final round, since I'm only one of three to make it there from around 100 applicants.

Your advice is much appreciated!

Well that is a tough spot. I can think of a few suggestions.

  1. What time does your PWM thing end? You could ask the MD to reschedule for later in the day after 5pm, but I don't really support this because they have a family or could be busy then.

  2. You can make up some bullshit excuse and ask to start the PWM internship on Tuesday so that you can interview with the MD. Make up something like my grandmother died or my aunt died....that excuse might actually work since no one would expect you to be trying to get out of the first day of your internship/trial period...I support this idea.

Gekko21, thanks for your input, emailed them asking if at all possible to do it on Friday, Monday would be really inconvenient for me but if absolutely won't work any other way then I will come in Monday. If that happens, I will try to start at the PWM place Tuesday, quoting some personal emergency. Thanks for your input.
