Advice on job seeking in HK

Hi all,

My first post. I am about to graduate from one of the best MFE programs in the US, and I am looking for quant/trading related opportunities in HK. I am not sure whether it's short of experience, timing or distance issue, it's hard for me to get an interview for those opportunities I found, even those junior level ones that I think I match all the job requirements. I am seeking some networking here as well as some advice on how to be better prepared for job seeking in HK.

Thanks a lot guys! Cheers

Here's my experience with getting internships in Asia, maybe it helps:

I got my internship in Shanghai (2017) through networking. Prior to that I had sent out an application a day for two months. The response rate was zero. I only got interviews after joining an expat group on LinkedIn and messaging everyone in a managing position.

Currently I'm between bachelor's and master's and I want to go back to Asia. Over the last nine months I applied multiple times for internships in Singapore with zero response so far. I thought that with more internships and new skills on my CV it wouldn't be hard to get internships. After all, my CV is good enough to get me interviews with MS and GS in Europe. But no success. Now I have to start knocking at virtual doors again.

Thank you very much for sharing it. I do agree that networking is one of the keys especially when the school I am studying at is not in HK. I tried to use LinkedIn to connect with people but didn't work well so far. Maybe I will seek help from headhunter as well. Good luck on your job seeking as well!

I'm not sure whether sharing resume (making it public) is a common thing here? I am at UC Berkeley.

I actually changed my career from actuary to this field so I am very open to company type, as long as it's quant research/trading.

Your program matters a lot here. Unlike other majors such as economics or computer science, MFE has a very narrow range of what could be considered target schools. And since MFE is getting less recognition in recent years (there are just too many data scientists with far more solid quantitative skills and just enough background in finance these years), you might need to dial up your quant background a little more to show your capability to survive in the industry that is transferring into a more tech driven business. I think HK employers generally require more solid technical skills than American employers.
