Am I Screwed?
I am applying to 2022 summer analyst positions and I haven't heard anything back from any firm I applied to. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or my application just isn't that great compared to others. I go to a top 10 school, 3.6+ GPA, a lot of activities at school and a summer internship for this summer. I submitted cover letters as part of my apps, I am also diversity but haven't heard anything back from anyone. Please help me!
Have you applied through your school’s career center? Or just online on the firm’s website? You should definitely be applying through your school if you are at a top 10 school.
The only firm on my school's career center website is Morgan Stanley. No other firm has any postings on this website. The website isn't the best as it doesn't get updated very often.
Do you not have on campus recruiting? I would expect firms to be posting resume drops at your school and doing interviews. That would definitely happen at any top 10 school (US universities).
Not that I am aware of. My school is weird and it seems like more people go to consulting than IB. I don't want to give away the school because I don't know if anyone I know uses this website. Let's just say it's the top 10 school located in the southeast.
Is it top 10 or top 10 amongst public schools. Big difference
Top 10 in the whole country and it is a private school anyway.
Are you at JHU? Don't think MD is the Southeast but that's the closest to a SE school in the top 10 I can think of
Duke is possible too
The school is Duke btw.
Duke has a ton of on campus recruiting, basically every bank recruits there. You should reach out to your career counseling. I know many people from Duke in finance.
Yeah bro Duke crushes it. You're doing something wrong. My PM went to Duke, 4 banking analysts I worked with went to Duke. Half my HF sales coverage at BBs went to Duke. Half the S&T floors are Duke Lax lol. You're not screwed is the good news. You just need to find the Duke career center I guess.
Although Duke is a top school, their resources aren't the best and I am not the only one who thinks that. So I just found out that some firms, not that many, had info sessions this spring semester and seems like there won't be any more this summer. What should I do now?
Well as I mentioned, a ton of Duke people are on the street. Start reaching out to them, they should be receptive. There's a ton of Duke folk in every single BB and most EBs I promise you this. Not sure if something has changed in the last 3 years but I was in GS FIG and we were taking 2 - 3 Duke undergrads a year. I guess that's irrelevant now since fact is you're struggling.
You aren’t doing it right. I know several people who went to Duke and there is a ton of on campus recruiting there. I know more than “a few” banks that go to campus every year, including several top buyside and prop firms. Maybe the career center isn’t pointing you in the right direction, but you are definitely missing something. With the caveat that this year is very different, info sessions are basically unheard of because of COVID (nobody traveling) but the targeted recruiting is definitely there. Make sure you don’t miss that.
Penn student (engineering^see username), diversity, 3.7 GPA
In the past year I got offers from BofA, CS, and GS. In every single case grades made 0 difference. You need to be reaching out to people who matter at the firms you want to work at. For CS and BofA I only got the interview cause I spoke with about 20 people in IBD at those places. At GS I got the job bc of relationships (no not my dad). After I interviewed I emailed an analyst who I knew liked me and he asked me who I spoke to that day, then proceeded to gas me up to all the people I interviewed (what a G right?) and that was that. I know so many people who just apply and wait, but it just doesn't work like that.
If I already submitted the applications, should I still network or is it too late?
Absolutely not, get in those linkedin DMs
Worth a shot either way
It is NEVER too late to network. Keep grinding! A role will come through your inbox, just stay persistent.
glad to see a fellow engineer make, definitely encouraging. I'm going to slide in your DMs
Make sure to network with analysts and associates prior to the resume drop just to be safe
