AM/WM Firm Search + Approach

A little background on myself:

- Incoming 4th year Spanish student in a 4 year programme at a target uni in London.

- Two 1-month relevant internships at AM firms in Brazil.

I'm aware of the Trackr for Graduate Schemes in London and will be keeping up with applications (as they tend to start in late August/early Sept.) and trying my best to secure one for the end of the year. As I'm an international student, the post-Brexit situation in terms of visa is less than ideal for me so I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible. I wanted to start networking early, sending out coffee chat messages, getting meetups, and maximizing my chances with smaller firms that may not be well-known to the public in the AM and WM industries, as those are my main interests, where my experience stem from, and what I'd like to pursue.

That being said, I ask two things:

Where can I find a list of any AM/WM firms in London? If there aren't any, what ways can I go about finding these types of firms?

What is the best approach to securing a full time position in one of those given my situation?

Thank you for reading, I don't mind clarifying anything else about me so let me know :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Finding a List of AM/WM Firms in London:

  1. WSO and Company Websites:

    • Look through Wall Street Oasis (WSO) and company websites to narrow down a list of potential firms. This can help you identify firms based on city, size, prestige, and consultant friendliness.
  2. LinkedIn and Company Websites:

    • Use LinkedIn and company websites to see the breakdown of the current class, such as the percentage of consultants, the number of employees from non-ivy league schools, and whether a business school degree is mandatory.
  3. Networking Events and Career Fairs:

    • Attend career events at universities like LSE, UCL, and Imperial. These events are great for networking and discovering firms that may not be well-known to the public.
  4. Finance Societies and Groups:

    • Follow and engage with top finance societies at these schools. Joining groups like SEO London can also provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into smaller firms.

Best Approach to Securing a Full-Time Position:

  1. Networking:

    • Start networking early by sending out coffee chat messages and setting up meetups. Building relationships with professionals in the industry can significantly increase your chances of securing a position.
  2. Headhunters and Recruiters:

    • Google search "Dartmouth partners" and follow their main London recruiters on LinkedIn. They often have loads of opportunities and can help you navigate the job market.
  3. Group Chats and Peer Support:

    • Find a core group of people who can help you push hard with applications. Group chats where you can share interview questions and other resources can be incredibly beneficial.
  4. Preparation for Applications:

    • Keep up with applications for graduate schemes, which tend to start in late August/early September. Make sure your CV and cover letters are tailored to each firm and highlight your relevant experience.
  5. Utilize Resources:

    • Use resources like the WSO Academy, which offers training programs and career services such as resume reviews and mock interviews to help you land more offers.

By following these steps, you can maximize your chances of securing a full-time position in the AM/WM industry in London. Best of luck!
