Anyone use a specific structure for their interview responses?

My school told us to use the STARR method when answering questions, I find it counterproductive to stick to a specific method because it takes away the ingenuity of an answer. If you can't answer the question on the spot, should you be there anyway? I've only done a handful of interviews, mostly minor so I don't know whether to prepare or be spontaneous. Is it worth researching potential questions or is it better to just wing it?
