Applying Internally - Multiple Offers
Hi All -
Long time lurker. Currently applying to move internally and am in different stages of the interview process for multiple teams. What is the best approach to let a team know they are my 1st choice without trying to leverage another offer internally and risk burning bridges? Figured speaking with HR of my 1st preference would be helpful to let them know of the situation to see if they could help push the process and timeline forward. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
I've been in a similar situation as yourself and discussed this with the hiring manager of the team that was my #1 choice (if you know a junior or are close to a senior in the team, you can raise this up with them as well). I just mentioned that I'm currently interviewing for other positions as well, but that I wanted to let him/her know that this team is my first choice.
When I received an offer from another team first, I just told the hiring manager from my team of choice that I've received another offer but wanted to reiterate the fact that his/her team is still my first choice and would appreciate it if they could potentially give me a heads up on the process from their end.
3 things could happen: 1. the team really likes you and tells you outright that you're their choice 2. the team likes you but decides that they still want to continue the interview with others as well to ensure that they've covered all candidates (in which case, all fair game and really depends on if you want to take a chance on waiting for the team's offer or just taking up the other team's offer) 3. the team decides that they don't really want you in the team and you get an outright no - in which case, no regrets going for another team
Perhaps 4 scenarios. Last one would be... you just don't get a reply, in which case, you know they don't like you enough to give you the courtesy of knowing anyway.
But mean what you say. Worst you can do is make the team hasten their interview process, give you an offer, but you end up choosing another team. Burns bridges from all ends and would be really bad faith even in the team you end up choosing (especially if they are in the same bank and know each other!).
