Are Certifications Becoming More Valuable Than Degrees in AI Careers?

AI and automation skills are evolving so quickly that many professionals are using certifications to break into new tech-focused roles faster.

Cloud, AI, data analytics, and automation credentials seem to be gaining more attention from employers, especially for career changers and early-career professionals.

Do you think certifications are becoming more valuable in hiring, or will traditional degrees still dominate long-term?

Certifications are definitely becoming more relevant, but they’re not replacing degrees, they’re more of a boost than a substitute.

From what I’ve seen, they’re most useful if you’re trying to switch fields or quickly build practical skills. For example, people moving into tech or consulting often use cloud, data, or AI certifications to show hands-on capability, even without a traditional background. Same for finance/consulting juniors picking up Python or AI workflows, not required, but a clear edge.

Some of the most valuable certifications right now are:

  • Cloud: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure (Fundamentals / Architect), Google Cloud Professional
  • Data / Analytics: Google Data Analytics, IBM Data Science, Microsoft Power BI

Also worth highlighting:

  • Microsoft Learn (almost free) is actually underrated, strong tracks on Azure, AI, data, Power Platform and widely used in consulting/corporates
  • Tools like n8n, Zapier, Make, Power Automate are becoming increasingly relevant for building automation workflows—people who can combine these with AI tools can create real productivity gains and stand out quickly

Where certifications don’t move the needle much is top-tier IB/PE or brand-driven recruiting—there, your degree + internships still matter most.
