Are graduate schemes the only way of getting into finance, banks, investment banking, or asset management? Can you send your CVs to local finance firms such as banks, financial advisory, wealth management, asset management, private equity or consulting? Did anybody get into the industry the non-traditional way? Did anyone get into a smaller finance firm without much experience or active job advertisement from the firm?

I have done significant informational interviewing with people who have come from similar roles as my own (FP&A) and made it to IB/MBB/PE and my findings are yes. Not that it can’t be done at all, but it’s the illusion of free. Yes, with no MBA you might network into an LMM but you really didn’t get what you want. You are going to be doing all of the work with none of the pedigree, none of the exit opps, etc. It’s sort of stupid that it’s distilled to this environment as IB/MBB effectively use top business schools as filters but that is what it is.
