Are these people serious?

I reached out to a MD at a firm just trying to set up some time with him on the phone. He forwarded my resume to someone just below him and I got an email about potential "contracting" opportunity.

I already have a full-time job with benefits and I am obviously only interested in a full-time job. Why would I leave a full-time job for a temporary job? Do I still talk with them on the phone and see what they offer?

No point in not talking to them. You could at least bring up that you're looking for a lateral move to another full-time position. Worst case scenario is they hang up, which probably won't happen if you are cordial.
