Aussie 1st year finance undergrad wondering what it takes

I have just finished up my first year of uni while completing a non related real estate during the year (but I am not intending to go into real estate). I have a decent gpa at 6/7 and have had the idea to teach myself coding in order to code a trading algorithm as a side project alongside my studies.

I am a bit of a nepo and have been able to have a few coffee chats throughout the year with a few fantastic finance professionals and analysts. While they have given me some great insights into finance, my city is not the centre in Australia for finance (especially BB IB or PE).

Just looking for some advice on what I should do throughout my studies and what goals I should be striving for in order to get into IB after uni?

Also wondering about whether it is worth going overseas after or during uni for finance?

Cheers
