Background check, please help

Hello everyone - I’m currently filing our my background check form and was curious as to what is checked during the process. They’re asking me to list managers and phone numbers - what are these managers allowed to disclose. Can they confirm performance/reputation, I’m particularly worried because in my previous position (got along with everyone and was quiet towards those that were controversial) I did a good job but particularly told the manager that a reason for my leave was due to limited career prospects and unfair staffing practices (turnover for team was 65% on a yearly basis) and I had an internship where I was harassed for being diversity (HR acknowledged)

Unlikely those managers get contacted unless there is a reason to (ie, you indicated that you had an involuntary separation aka fired). Those managers are allowed to disclose whatever they want, though they are often chary to do so because they could get sued for slander. Some people on this site have posted that it is illegal for past employers to disclose information about your job performance. This is incorrect, they can talk about your work performance and theoretically whatever they want. Background checks are mostly about rap sheet and criminal record.

Got it, some additional questions

1) Can I give them details of the HR or someone other than the manager

2) Certain positions don’t really have a manager - can I give common details

3) let’s say someone were to misrepresent, would the HR pull the offer or reach out to me

Most Helpful

1) If they ask who your manager was, you'll need to give the person to whom you reported (aka not HR).

2) You could give manager's name and the general company phone number (that's what I always do, because I don't know my internship manager's desk phone)

3) If someone were to say you were shit at your past job, they may reach out to your. Most likely, they wouldn't care. Big companies have procedures for what to do when another firm asks for employee history. Often they will only provide your standing at departure (as in fired or not fired). Big companies don't want the headache of saying the wrong thing and getting sued. There is no benefit to them for shit talking you. IF the background check people actually contact those references, it is unlikely they will speak with your actual manager. They will speak with HR at that firm who will give a cookie cutter answer per their policies.
