Being Asked Technicals During A Networking Call

Slightly funny story: I am in the mid-stages of talking to a group at a BB about their full time roles (have a SA lined up but looking for something a little different for FT) [this group sounds amazing]. First I connected with a VP from my college - went well 30 minute call which was slightly awkward but it was due to me. Then continued with an associate in his group who was also a college alumni. This call went great, lasted over an hour, really got a good feel for the group and felt like I had a shot to recruit there FT based on what he said.

Then he connected me with a co-worker of his who is an analyst. I was super excited to be connected with someone outside of my university circle.

After a brief intro, he hits me with the classic, "Could we transition to techicals". My face went pale as shit and I knew I was fucked. I got my offer for SA in March and so stopped reading the guides. I did alright on the 15 minutes of techicals he hit me with - nothing to crazy and I had my past internship to pull from.

Very long winded story, honestly find it funny now.

My question to you lovely people of WSO, is it normal to ask get asked techicals in a networking call? Was this like a pre-first round interview or likely just a guy wanting to see if I knew my stuff? I am very interested to why he would ask techs since I have had around 100 calls with people during recruiting last winter and early spring, but no one asked any unless we were interviewing.

This happens a lot in tech type interviews imo. Especially with start-ups, they literally just randomly hammer you with specific business problems they are facing right after you talk through your resume. In finance, I rarely got ridiculously caught of guard during the first call. You were a little unlucky.

Guy sounds like an insecure and overworked analyst haha.

You were recruiting/networking for FT at banks before your SA? Is this normal? I thought it was looked down upon to network before giving ur SA a chance, any info would be greatly apprecited.

I've heard this from a fair few people that this is the case. My situations a bit unique as to why I'm looking to transfer. I was in a car wreck which was pretty serious and ended my recruiting. Because it's so early I'm just looking show general interest in learning more about the group, as opposed to specifically inquiring about potential openings. At the end of the day I'm just trying to keep as many contacts warm for once I hit the desk.

Houlihan RX does this every year for SA at least. One day they just flip the switch and turn all networking calls into first rounds without telling anyone. My call went 30 minutes over and I barely got to ask any questions of my own.
