Best strategy for a Canadian applying to MM/Boutiques in the states?

I was just wondering if anyone had any input or thoughts on the topic. I am at target school in Canada and will be looking for an SA position

My initial inclination is that networking with alumni at different banks at places all over the states is the best course of action. However, considering I would be limited too just emails, phone calls and skype I am wondering about what kind of success I can expect.
