Can I Trust a Verbal Offer?
I just received a written offer from UBS and they've given me 3 days to provide a response. I got a verbal offer call from MS on the same day but the person on the phone told me it would take about 1-2 weeks to generate an official offer. MS is my first choice but I also don't want to decline the UBS offer before I get the official one from MS. Is asking MS to expedite the process of generating the official offer the right thing to do?
Can you get them to meet you halfway with email confirmation?
HR from MS replied me that “We won’t be able to get you the offer letter by Friday. But I can assure you we will submit the details today—in anticipation we can get the offer letter out to you by next week.” Does this count as written confirmation?
No, only make decisions when it's in writing. Granted you’re dealing with large banks You’re less likely to get screwed.
Accept the UBS offer and tell Morgan Stanley you have an exploding offer and would really appreciate an expedited offer. If Morgan Stanley comes through, then just let ubs know circumstances changed. And if Morgan Stanley screws you, it doesn’t matter.
That sounds like the best thing to do. But do you know if I’m bounded legally if I sign the offer?
Call up MS and tell them you have an exploding offer from UBS, but MS is your first choice. Given the situation, can they present you with a formal offer.
EDIT: Saw you mentioned HR said they can’t by Friday. But if there’s an MD or someone from IBD group hiring you can speak with, they may be able to push for it.
When was your superday for UBS? And which office?
Can you try and get a deadline extension from UBS? Might be worth a shot if MS HR can’t go faster.
No, you can not. Good advice here on exploding offers and communication. I know we accelerate candidates we want with this information.
Be prepared for them to tell you to pound sand, but worth a shot.
Don't lose the bird in the hand...
normally no, but yes because it is UBS. Europeans hate fucking over their workers
Update: Thank you all for the suggestions! UBS gave me a one-week extension until this Friday. MS said the official offer should be out by this week, but I still haven't received it. Should I ask MS again to let them know about the new deadline and expedite the process again? I don't want to be seen as being too pushy.
