Canadians Moving to US (Experienced)

Hi all, wondering if there are Canadians on this forum who have some advice with moving to NY or SF as a lateral (ie not as an internal transfer). Went from buyside to a director-level strategy role at a Series B startup (thus finding the IB/consulting threads on this topic helpful, but not perfectly so). Would like to stay on operator side but could be open if I got a look at the right fund. That said, any and all stories or advice on how to approach the transition as an experienced hire (networking from abroad, companies to target, recruiters to engage/avoid, cold applying, etc) would be more than welcome.
