Career advice - Italian 23yo

Hi everyone,

A year ago, I graduated from Bocconi with a bachelor’s in management (GPA 3.3) and chose to work instead of pursuing an MSc right away (I was admitted to ESCP but declined). At the time, my career goals were unclear.

Work Experience: • 6 months: Small Italian PE fund (NPL investing) – internship during undergrad • 3 months: Market research firm (marketing + some statistics – reflects my indecision back then) • Current: Full-time at the same small PE fund (team of 10, no growth potential)

Over time, I’ve developed a strong interest in structuring/financial modeling and want to transition to sales/structuring roles in a BB. I’m seeking a dynamic, intellectually stimulating environment where I can learn from top talent. I don’t wanna work in Italy since finance culture is shit and career opps are 0.

Goals: • MSc in Finance (dreaming of the U.S. but considering Europe: SSE, HSG, NOVA for financial reasons) • Open to debt if the U.S. option is truly worth it (dream is to work there).

Challenges: • Weak GPA (3.3) • Money: Parents won’t fund my MSc due to undergrad performance.

Currently studying for the GMAT (target: January/February).

If you were in my position, what path would you recommend? Get in debt and fly to the US or maybe stick to Europe, avoid financial strain and then pivot towards the US later?

Thanks!

The US MSF path isn't a great one, especially for an international. Unlike europe there isnt necessarily the expectation to complete a masters, and you're still competing with the undergrads so not many pipelines.

See how you come out of the GMAT. Add RSM to your list, but be warned it closed in an hour or something this year when Apps opened in August (i think).

First of all, master the GMAT, especially if you’re struggling economically, getting a competitive score will boost the chances of both being admitted (considering that applications season is started, you’ll be in a less favourable position) and getting a good scholarship. Secondly, speak with the Business School, compare them, they’ll present you their career report and their recruitment standards, and their funding options. I’ve been in NYC recently and a LOT of students came there after a Master in Europe, since studying in US is not going to guarantee you a VISA (3 years of STEM will not be sufficient) but eventually will guarantee a HUGE loan… well, that wouldn’t be an easy choice, since you’re basically YOLOing your life. But, again, all of this comes later, first master your GMAT
