Changing Interview Date Due to Travel Expense?
I am a recent graduate from a non-target. I have been in talks with a boutique in Chicago. I had a phone interview earlier today, and it went well. They would like me to fly out next week (September 2nd to 6th) for an in-person interview. These dates, however, are not completely confirmed yet.
Unfortunately, they "don't know" if they will be able to reimburse me for travel expenses. Essentially, I will have to pay around $500 for a flight. If I was able to push the interview back to the following Monday, September 9th, I would be able to get the flight for around $180. While this doesn't seem like much, I am EXTREMELY strapped for cash, and it would be incredibly helpful. Is it acceptable to see if the interviewer would be capable of moving the interview to a later date or would I be shooting myself in the foot?
I'm surprised they are making you pay for your own flight. I am not a big fan of companies that do this because it means they might not be willing to provide reasonable compensation. However, to answer your question, just ask them. I have rescheduled interviews before.
Thanks for the reply. I know people that are familiar with the firm, and they pay well, albeit below Street. They tend to recruit locally, so they aren't terribly used to flying in candidates. The interviewer wasn't immediately sure if they would be able to reimburse, but it may be a possibility.
Are there any other opinions?
I don't think it would hurt to ask.
Agree. It's OK to ask them I think.
