I just got an offer from Citi for their portfolio analytics group in operations. Does anyone have any experience working there. What is the career path like? What is the salary range for new hires? They offered me 55K. Is it hard to move up to a front office role? Basically, I just want to know what my future will be like working at Citi in ops. Any comment or input will be greatly appreciated

i dont know what PAG at citi is like, but when people talk about PAG at blackrock it is considered pretty decent because you can transition into portfolio management or maybe trading, almost banking hours though. But obviouly citi groups it under operations. As far as work goes, you won't be clearing trades or doing data entry, it's more analytical. There have been tons of BR PAG threads here, those might tell you more.
Citi PAG >> Blackrock PAG. It'll be relatively easy to transition to FO, but your best bet is a top 3 MBA. I do think they lowballed you on the 55k though, most guys make like 70k entry level.
Can someone comment on JP Morgan Porfolio Analytics group please?
I know someone that works there and says that most of the guys who leave go on to be portfolio managers and other decent FO positions.

Moving laterally from ops to S&T is extremely difficult, especially nowadays. Your best bet is to try to get into a top b-school after a few years and get in as an associate post-MBA.

I took an operation position right out of college 2 years ago just to get my foot in the door but found that moving to the front office is exceptionally difficult. My advice is to wait for something better.
Kids like fordhammasta work at Citi Ops. At least go for HF ops if you have to do ops. Or work at McDonalds, general manager is a pretty sweet job there.

A smaller firm has offered me the choice of group and the individual sated I could be "confident" that I would be placed there. I would rather be in Citi though, ad the individuals on this board say the brand name would be better

Well you would definitely be able to voice your preference, but where you actually get hired could depend on business need which could be quite random.
I know that many of you may not really have experience with OPS, but would you reccomendation that I take Citi over the smaller MM anyways and hope to be placed or switched in?
Depends what the group in the MM is...... If it's something you really want to do, take the MM. If it's something you rather do compared to randomly getting placed at Citi- take Citi...

I was speaking with a fellow WSO member and was told that the only chance I would basically have to move to FO would be in S&T as it is nearly impossible in IB, so that would be the division I would be shooting for. I'm just unsure of the chances that I would be put into something like PWM OPS.

How's it going? I was wondering what the job description of a typical Analyst is in Operations at Citi. I was always under the impression that operations had to do with making sure that all the companies processes were running smoothly - hence "Business Operations." But does it have to do a lot with computer related tech stuff? Or more analyzing financial data? I'm a bit confused, and all of the job descriptions are extremely vague.
Operations is very vague and has multiple subsegments. Look into the job descriptions as every function of the bank has an operation team covering for them. See if you could speak with someone in the program to learn more if the job description does not help.

No O/T :-\, anybody have any information about pay/career progression. I asked Citi and they said after 2 years most stay with the company in the NY office and become either a specialist or a manager. I don't know anything about pay or career progression beyond that.

I just graduated in May with a BBA, concentration in Finance with minors in International Business and Economics, I have an interview with Citibank monday for their Operation Analyst position. They said that I will be interviewed for all the open departments within Ops Analyst and then we will see where I fit best. I have been doing research on the position but have found vague info. Has anyone worked in this program before and have any insight? What is the starting salary, basic day to day responsibilities? Is it one of those programs where I am training for a year with a less than decent salary before I officially am an ops analyst? They have openings in Claims Utility, Accounting, Treasury and Derivatives. Even though I was a finance major I am not extremely interested in Investment Banking and would rather start a career path towards corporate finance. Is this not the path I should be taking then? Any advice would be helpful, I barely know what to do with my degree since I am not trying to become involved in investment banking. I truly would love to work within the finance division of a company that interests me, and eventually become a CFO (obviously a long ways away), but where do I start for that career path? I feel like all entry level jobs for finance majors are either in Insurance Sales (Met Life etc...) or Investment Banking. I surely need some advice :) Thanks!!

It sucks I have a 3.4 with a trading internship background from Stern, I'm extremely knowledgable about the markets, but a 3.4 isn't going to get you a front office trading, so I think I'm stuck with this.
I mean its not bad, and the pay is good, so I'm happy what I got with this environment. But when they tell you you were one of the best, it kind of makes me feel like I could've done better job wise.
I think you should focus on getting/taking what is most interesting to you.

Ops at another bank or completely different industry... No idea, I dont think that you have exit opps in Banking/PE/HF/Consulting/CF...
There are no exit opportunities. You're going to have to work tooth and nail to find them yourself.

look, ask the ops guys to shadow there for a few days, meet the people etc so you can see the mentality of the people, whats the work about and so on..
dont know about you, but i had a short insight into what BO guys work, and i cant imagine myself working there; id do something totaly different from finance if that was my only choice.. when i didnt have much to do (yeah, happens...) i assisted them like once or twice on different projects... man.. mid aged women, everybody is easy going and polite, work is not challenge

Good exit opps surprisingly. i know somebody from Citi opps who did product control and got an associate position at Citadel group front office.
In this market...opps is just as competitive as ever. You still need to interview well and have a decent resume...just less technical interviews.

not all, the restructuring is moving them to more "cost efficient" locations like jersey, florida etc..
the package is 60k +10k which isnt bad, no over time though. They said I'd probably get put in derivative operations in NYC. Any info on job progression/exit ops, pay progression, culture, etc?

They always pitch ops at Fordham because it isn't a school recruited for front-end positions. I took the offer for the operations analyst program ASAP knowing it was one of the better career options at fordham for business students.
