I have always found "informational interview" to be far too formal, especially for alumni of your school. I have been able to get a decent hit rate with "x school student Interested in x Firm" or "x school student - Connection"
I sent the below to maybe 7-8 people and got 4 replies (all at the same MBB):
"Time for a Fellow SCHOOL Alum?"
Then, the body was pretty short with a tiny intro and asking for a few mins of their time to discuss the firm/their role/experience.
Did those replies end up getting you an interview? Also, where did you find their emails?
LinkedIn's InMail. One of them gave me a mock before my R1 at Bain and BCG. I had already applied before contacting them (I acknowledge I did it kinda backwards).
“Introduction -John Doe (Xyz University)”
