Companies walking back follow up interview invitations?

Hi folks,

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

After 2.5 years in my current role (specialty consulting for PE) I am looking to make a move into PE biz dev roles and/or venture funds. My background is fairly relevant for the space, and I've been successful in getting interviews. However, I've now had a few instances where the interviewer will propose next steps and/or having me meet other members of the team only to either ghost me or later walk back their statement (i.e. reject my candidacy).

What explains this 180 or lack of follow through? Is it a matter of biz dev types being "people pleasers?" Could I be putting undue pressure on them to take an unwanted "next step?" Or do you think it could be something specific to me or my background? I would be interested to know if anybody else has had this happen to them, or if you have any advice for me in this field.
