Complete Cold Emails

I've had calls with most of my school's alumni, and had a bunch of people refer me to their colleagues. However, now I've pretty much exhausted all my alumni contacts – would it be a smart idea to complete cold mail people with no shared experiences/schools/hobbies? Everyone I've called said its a numbers game and you want to cast a really wide net but wondering how wide that net should be.
