Computer Science Major @ UPenn. Is consulting/finance an option?

Hey everyone,

A little bit about myself, I'm a sophomore at UPenn who recently switched into computer science from chemical engineering. I love coding, but after taking a consulting/finance/accounting class where we did Harvard MBA case studies, I realized I am actually kind of interested in consulting/finance. How can I learn more about these fields and figure out if they're right for me? In my current state, without much business experience (besides my class) + lack of leadership roles, do I even have a chance at getting consulting/finance interviews next year (I'd be willing to send over a resume if anyone is interested)? Furthermore, I have a coding internship for the summer, but I want to add some business related activities to my resume. I plan on joining the investment and trading group next semester as well as interviewing for consulting clubs. Is there anything I can do over the summer (programs, courses, etc.) to increase my chances of getting an interview/internship offer?

Thanks guys!

That gives me some hope! I'm willing to work my ass off and I'm definitely interested in learning more about business. I just don't know how to show this. Obviously I could take more business classes but that isn't really a resume builder. I'm going to try my hand at some case competitions next semester, but I'm worried I won't have anything to show while I'm going through OCR in the fall. If I show interest in business next year and do some lower level business internship junior year, would I have a good chance of getting a good job my senior year?

Business classes will help, you can just add them under relevant coursework on your resume. First semester junior year might be kind of late to recruit for consulting clubs but it should help you for full-time (idk about SA because you would be joining one when hiring is already starting) since at my lower Ivy the top consulting club has a wide range of majors and seems to place well into consulting. I honestly can't really provide much more advice other than anecdotes because I don't have experience in recruiting for consulting jobs.

Yeah Junior year definitely would be a little late. I'll try to get into consulting during OCR. Most likely, if I decide to do consulting over tech then I'll probably get a smaller role my junior summer and go for a big name my senior year. So business classes, case comps, and clubs? Are those the only ways I can show my interest in business?
