Confused About Summer Offer to Optimize for Full Time Recruiting
I want to re-recruit full-time once this internship is over for another bank in NY/CA/Chicago and want to optimize my position for recruiting but also want to take into consideration that I may have to work there full-time.
If you want to go into IB, do IB. Even if your offer was from a no name boutique that advice stands. It is quite hard to get into IB if you're not doing that type of work.
Also - even if you don't land the SA -> FT switch to a bigger firm, which can be hard, switching at 1 year FT is extremely easy.
Thank you so much for the advice. Quick clarification, do you mean that it's easier to transition from someplace regional after 1 year
Yep - SA to FT is a lot harder than lateraling at 1 year FT. You've got lots of SAs with offers looking to upgrade, and you'll be competing against people from legit MM/BBs. Around 1 year there is attrition, people don't want to start over in a new group, etc and groups are just looking for people with experience. If you have 1 year experience IB literally anywhere (even at a 10 man regional shop) you will get solid MM leads, and probably some BB/EB interviews, just from applying online. 1 year in IB is THAT valuable.
So yes, I'd take it over any of your other offers if you want IB. If you're not sure and AM sounds cool, that is still a very solid gig, but you're unlikely to be able to lateral into IB at all.
