Corporate Development Vs Corporate Treasury
Hi,
I was wondering if someone can describe what type of person will enjoy corporate development and corporate treasury so I can get a feel for which one I'd want to pursue. From what I understand, these are the two most prestigious areas of corporate finance, so some general info about what they do in general would be great as well. I can probably research on my own the day-to-day activities, so that's less important, but if anyone can shed some light about who would enjoy what or other info about these jobs, that would be greatly appreciated (SBs maybe?)
OK wait, I just read that corporate development is sometimes lumped UNDER corporate treasury. Is that correct?
you can refer to the following thread I posted which should help you understand corpdev better (//www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/the-other-road-corporate-development-ass…)
also refer to the following thread which describes corporate treasury jobs (//www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/what-do-corporate-treasury-people-at-f50…)
the very simple distinction is that corpdev is generally the internal investment banking arm of a company focused on M&A, strategic investment, joint ventures, divestitures, etc. While treasury is generally responsible for managing the firm's capital structure, dividend program, cash management, credit & collections, FX hedging, short-term and long-term portfolio management, etc.
In other words people that generally like IBD/M&A jobs will like corpdev while people that enjoy S&T will like treasury better.
Organizationally, sometimes corpdev falls under the same group as treasury but most of the time they are separate arms.
Hi, I know this was posted a while ago, Im interested in working in treasury and Im in my final year at a top british university, I will be working in audit at the big 4, How can I get into the top treasury programs post qualification? I remember you mentioned somewhere I should be looking at Microsoft, Google, Apple but how do I know what companies have 'in house trading' or 'top notch treasury programs'? What would you say the best move is for me after qualification? Thanks!
The above poster is right in terms of the general split of responsibilities between the two teams and the skillsets generally required. I work in the corporate development arm of a company, and I have a background in IBD. In general, I think that there is one corporate finance team, and treasury and corporate development fall within this team (and sure there are other functional areas as well within the corp fin team).
One thing which we also do (not mentioned in the post above) as a part of the corp dev team is to raise finance for acquisitions/new projects
Vaguefunda: is M&A the only "IB" experience that feeds into corporate development or would capital markets, corporate/commercial banking, equity research also lead to it potentially? I think that I really, really want to do corporate development, but getting into banking seems extremely difficult at the moment.
I am not a know-it-all when it comes to corporate development, but from what I have seen these are the following backgrounds usually: - people who started in corp dev and stayed on - people from consulting - IB - mainly M&A. I work in an infrastructure related company, and I have seen some people from equity research and even rating agencies here - Again, as a quirk of the infrastructure sector, there are a few bankers from the project finance side
