Highly suggest using Linkedin Premium account to use the Inmails (you can message anyone you find). Also, speak with people in your school older than you (seniors etc) that have made it to banking to introduce people to you.
Just did the same thing went to a big SEC state school, Network is the only way. Join the investment club they all have one. As for Linked in search for the name of your business school not your school, you will find a much more detailed search on Linkedin. You don't need a million contacts either took me a solid group of 15 contacts all who knew and respected me to find a dream gig. I did go other routes as too targeting firms and cold-calling MDs, Analysts, etc. but if your state-school is even semi-large, you should find plenty of people too reach out too.
Agreed there is a large network from my school but to be honest very few of them are in investment banking. The few people who are, I have already spoken too. I have gathered a ton of emails of Analysts, Associates, VPs, and MDs. I emailed like 8 analysts and only got one response which actually went quite well. I have decided that I will reach out to people with more power like Vps and MDs.
