Did i mess up..?

I had an informational-type interview set up with an alum who's very high up at a particular firm, and I called at the scheduled time but got his voicemail. This is the type of person that can definitely help me out in the near future, but I wasn't expecting the answering machine so i kind of fumbled through the message and ended up mentioning to call me back if he had a chance. Was that the wrong thing to say or am I overthinking it?

Thanks

As long as it wasn't a 2-3 minute rambling message that you ended by accidentally saying "I love you dad," then you're overthinking it.

"I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Assuming you didn't actually say something stupid, you're fine. He missed your scheduled time so it's his fault and he probably knows it. And in any case, asking someone to return your (missed) call is perfectly normal voicemail etiquette. I'd follow up in a day or two with a polite email mentioning you tried to reach him, left a VM, hope you can reschedule and look forward to speaking.

You're in a good mood....
