Different jobs on Wall Street

I am as of now starting my job search. Will start my M.Fin this summer and until then I will spend my spare time studying up and preparing for searching for jobs.

What I wanted to ask you pros out there is this:

When comparing the different career tracks there are on Wall Street (or just finance) how would you say the outlook is for a job and what is the starting/future salary like?

I have always been most interested in trading, but it seems to be a shared dream with almost anyone else who want's to get into finance, and I have heard that the chances of landing a job in sales and trading is slim to none. What other careers would in the same way serve my interest in the market? I have been looking at Research. Looks really interesting! Am I right to assume that a Research position is a Front Office position?
