Disciplinary Probation / Background Check
Hello,
I've been searching around, but haven't been able to find any concrete answers. I was placed on deferred suspension (basically a scarier version of probation) for fighting earlier this year (sophomore). I'm trying to gauge how damaging this will be career wise, and when / if I'll need to disclose it.
- Do many summer analyst positions inquire about school judicial records? Do any?
- Is this something that all business schools will ask about? Or are some just going to look for suspensions / expulsions? Wasn't able to find much in terms of actual applications.
- Does anyone have any experience with a similar disciplinary record? Did it ever come back to haunt you or was it a significant obstacle?
The incident itself is a lot worse than a MIP or getting busted with weed. It wasn't bad enough to be suspended, but it's the sort of thing that if disclosed would probably kill my chances at a job. Am I totally screwed? Should I give up on a career in finance? Or will this not even matter in the long term?
My main question, though, is just whether I'm going to have to disclose this on BG checks for SA positions, since that would probably bar me from getting significant WE.
Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated, as I'm probably more worried about this than is reasonable.
In my experience of going through the background check at a BB and F500, they never ever checked the school's disciplinary record - they only asked for a transcript to be sent directly from the school.
Assuming that your academic transcript doesn't have the disciplinary record you should be fine.
Also, I am assuming this matter never reached the actual police and was resolved within the college.
Even if you need to disclose it it won't 100% screw you. A buddy of mine got his MBA from a semi target and had an assault charge on his record from getting in a college fight. He's now working at GS/MS. I'm sure he's a bit of an oddball but it's doable.
