Do I have a shot with an internship with low GPA and a CFA level 2?

I am currently doing my service in the military until 2019 August, and I want to know if I am screwed after I'm out of the military with the resume I currently have.

GPA 2.5 out of 4.3 (Only finished 1st year of uni)
Speak 4 languages (Eng, Korean, Chinese, Japanese)
CFA level 2
College: HKU (major in finance)

I'm I already screwed with my resume to get my first intern in finance in Hong Kong? I am looking to boost my GPA as soon as I return to school next year, but at the mean time I want to do an internship before I head back to college next year September.. Some guidance or advices will help !!

I don't think you were supposed to take CFA L2 in college. But, it is impressive and offsets your GPA in a way. You may have a chance at locking in some internship.

For anyone who knows the CFA program though, it is very odd ... and impressive. But, also I seem to recall there being a question when filling out CFA L2 registration if you have completed your bachelors before registering for the exam. I don't know how you got past this question.

Thanks for the comment Isaiah!

Um as far I am concerned my military time is recognized by the CFA so it was not a problem (well the CFA didn't question me anyway).

If I aim for the top IB firm internship with my current resume available, do you think I have a shot? I just heard way too many people saying any GPA less than 3.5 will not land you a decent internship at a well-known IB..

Oh ok Military - cool.

IB is likely out unless you know someone very well. They don't really care about the CFA exams and your GPA is really under.

Why did you take the CFA exams if you want IB? You might have some luck with investment management type of internships as anyone who has passed the CFA exams will know that an intern who knows L2 material will be legit. So, see what you can get, but even with that GPA it might be hard. The military will be a plus though.

Should I then focus on my GPA when I returned to school next year? I am only done with my 1st year which gives me 3 more years to work on my GPA. Do you think then I should hold off internship until maybe end of 2nd year of uni with better GPA? I guess I still have to do lots of call calling and networking to somehow balance my low GPA in a sense..

Fellow HKU student who also went to complete the military service after a poor-GPA freshman year too!

May I ask about how your career development journey went after returning to the HKU? I am a BSc(QFin) Taiwanese student expecting to be off duty by 1 July and will be returning to school this Sept. My gpa was 3.2-ish.

Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to prepare myself for the upcoming sophomore year? Was the CFA useful and should I take it? What’s your experience/suggestions on seeking an ib internship opportunity in hk post military service? (Should I have an internship in year 2?)

Any guidance will be of big help to me :D
