Elevator Callback

I met a VP at a well known global firm today in the elevator and ended up talking with him for about 15 minutes. He invited me to stop by his office when I'm home for Spring Break to talk more. Was he just being polite or is this the sign of a good first impression/possible tangible outcome? I'm a senior at a regional target.

Not a good sign, a GREAT sign.

Best advice I've heard all day. That will be good practice for what you REALLY do in this industry.

My question is what building were you in that necessitated you being in an elevator for 15 minutes?

... and what exactly did you spontaneously decide to talk about for 15min while sustaining his attention?

I'll field this as a serious question since elevator conversation is an essential tool in networking. The ability to sustain a conversation with a senior level executive is easily one of your most valuable assets. You never know who you'll meet or when you'll meet them. A 20 second elevator ride turned into a 15 minute conversation with the person who's reading your resume. The conversation consisted of topics such as educational background, future interests, current activities, internships, classes, hobbies, and of course also some information on the firm. But the way to hold the conversation is to also find out their interests, hobbies, education, etc. It shouldn't be one-sided; it's a conversation.
