Entering Investment Banking or Risk Management in IB from another sector of financial services

Hi everyone,

I have been interested in working in investment banking since university but when applying in my second and final years, I had no luck. I was fairly well prepared, but just lacked the knowledge and experience, as my university course wasn't finance centric. I am still very interested in transitioning into the risk department of an investment bank, but I cannot see my route in at the moment.

I worked in a central bank for a year for a job placement, where I worked in credit risk reporting for the trading operations, and I now have almost 18 months under my belt working in commercial credit risk for a very large worldwide payments firm, reviewing the international B2B portfolio for what basically is trade finance and working capital optimisation.

I have just sat my CFA level I, pending results and I feel significantly more prepared and more informed that this is definitely the career I want. I took the exam on my own time, with no study leave as I want it to be my bridge into the investment banking sector.

How can I get in with the investment banks and compete with others who have the experience? I genuinely feel like a true asset, but I am lacking the investment banking title on my CV to be seen, and I am unsure of the best medium or platform to use to secure a dream job.

Has anyone else transitioned from a non investment banking role into investment banking at a junior level position?

I would really appreciate some insight, as at the moment I am going in a little blind. Thanks in advance!
