Re-recruiting as a senior w/ a gap year | Want some advice

Title -

I had to take a year off from school (as a senior) due to some health-related problems that should resolve by end of year. Prior to taking the time off, I had a junior year internship at a top bank and received a return offer. But bank was understandably not able to accomodate the leave. So, I am now re-recruiting as a first semester senior.

I plan on recruiting in IB, VC, PE, Commercial Banking and consulting. I have experience in all of these (via internships and school clubs) so I can meld my story in a way that fits it.

My questions:

1. Is it too late for any of these processes?
2. How should I explain this gap? (I currently plan on not disclosing unless asked, editing my resume such that only my graduation date is shown. If prior contacts ask about the gap, I just plan on disclosing I had a surgery and a family emergency (both true).
3. How do I get over feeling very defeated and low confidence heading into re-recruiting? (I feel like life has just batted me down this entire year and I know it will show in how I speak and present myself in interviews)

Thank you!

  1. It's not necessarily too late for these processes. Many firms have different recruiting timelines, and some may even appreciate your unique situation and the resilience you've shown. However, it's important to start reaching out and networking as soon as possible to understand the timelines for each industry you're interested in.

  2. Your plan to explain the gap seems reasonable. It's not necessary to disclose personal health information unless you're comfortable doing so. Stating that you had a surgery and a family emergency is truthful and should be sufficient for most recruiters.

  3. It's completely understandable to feel defeated and low in confidence after such a challenging year. However, remember that everyone faces setbacks and what matters most is how you respond to them. Try to focus on the positive aspects of your situation, such as the unique perspective you've gained and the resilience you've shown. Practice self-care and consider seeking support from a counselor or therapist to help manage these feelings. Remember, it's okay to ask for help.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck with your re-recruiting process!
