Feeling Lost – No FT Offer After Strong BB Off-Cycle, Struggling with Rejections & Resume Gap

Hey everyone,

I’m struggling a lot right now, and I could really use some advice or just some support from people who might understand what I’m going through.

A bit about my situation: I graduated from my master’s in 2023 and did an off-cycle internship at a BB in London (think MS, JPM, BofA) in an industry team, which ended in June 2024. I loved the job, got great reviews, and the team really wanted to keep me. But because of headcount cuts (too many return offers given out before my stint + shrinking analyst class), I wasn’t offered a FT role.

Since then, I’ve been in 10-15 recruiting processes—mostly for IB, PE, and PC roles in London. I’ve made it to final rounds multiple times, but for one reason or another (mistakes on my end, diversity priorities, not having a visa, the lack of a return offer) I keep falling short. At first, I was picky, thinking my strong background would land me something great. But as time passed and the rejections piled up, I expanded my search.

Now, months later, I feel completely stuck. My resume gap keeps coming up in interviews, and I can tell it’s hurting my chances. The market is brutal, and every day that goes by makes me feel worse about myself. To make things worse, I’ve already done 5 internships, and I feel like I’m too old to be going for another one—especially after graduating over a year ago. But without a FT offer, I don’t know what my best move is.

I don’t like the idea of lying, but I also don’t think it’s fair that I’m getting ruled out just because I haven’t been working for a few months. I feel like I’m spiraling—my confidence is shot, I don’t want to let my parents down (they spent a lot for my master’s), and the idea of settling for something far below what I worked for feels like failure.

I know many people have been through tough times in this industry. If anyone has advice—on how to deal with this, how to stay motivated, or even just how to fill the gap in a way that doesn’t kill my chances—I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks for reading.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a structured approach to tackle your situation and regain momentum:

1. Address the Resume Gap Strategically

  • Unpaid or Flexible Internships: Consider taking on a local internship, even if unpaid, to keep your resume fresh. This could be with a boutique IB, valuation firm, or financial consulting firm. It shows you’re staying active and committed to the field.
  • Freelance or Project Work: Offer your skills for financial modeling, valuation, or consulting projects. Highlight these as “independent consulting” on your resume.
  • Certifications or Courses: Enroll in relevant certifications (e.g., CFA, financial modeling courses) to demonstrate continuous learning and fill the gap.

2. Expand Your Job Search

  • Off-Cycle Internships: These are often more accommodating for candidates with gaps and can lead to FT roles. Many BBs and EBs in London offer these.
  • Related Roles: Apply to roles in Big 4 Valuations, Corporate Banking, or Strategy Consulting. These can serve as stepping stones to IB or PE later.
  • Smaller Firms: Don’t overlook MM or boutique banks. They often have less rigid hiring processes and can provide valuable experience.

3. Refine Your Story

  • Own the Gap: Be honest but strategic. Frame the gap as a period of focused job searching, skill-building, and personal growth. Emphasize the competitive market and your proactive steps to stay engaged.
  • Highlight Strengths: Focus on your strong BB off-cycle experience, positive reviews, and technical skills. Show that you’re ready to hit the ground running.

4. Network Aggressively

  • Alumni and Mentors: Reach out to alumni from your master’s program or previous colleagues. They can provide referrals or insights into hidden opportunities.
  • Cold Outreach: Target professionals at firms you’re interested in. Personalize your messages and ask for informational interviews.
  • Recruiters: Engage with headhunters specializing in IB, PE, or PC roles. They can help you navigate the market and find roles suited to your profile.

5. Stay Resilient and Flexible

  • Broaden Your Horizons: Consider roles outside London or even outside IB/PE for now. A strong role in corporate finance or FP&A can still position you for laterals.
  • Focus on the Long Game: Remember, careers span decades. A temporary detour doesn’t define your trajectory. Many professionals pivot successfully after setbacks.

6. Mental Health and Confidence

  • Seek Support: Talk to mentors, peers, or even a career coach to regain perspective and confidence.
  • Set Small Goals: Break your job search into manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Stay Active: Engage in activities outside of work to maintain a positive mindset.

7. Practical Next Steps

  • Optimize Your Resume: Ensure it’s tailored to each role, highlighting relevant skills and achievements.
  • Track Deadlines: Apply early to roles, as timing is critical in competitive markets.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice with friends or mentors to refine your responses and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Remember, you only need one offer to turn things around. Stay persistent, and don’t let temporary setbacks define your worth. The WSO community has seen countless success stories from situations like yours—keep pushing forward!

You graduated a year ago and have 5 internships, i have also graduated a year ago but I don't even have one internship, i work in the backend job. Keep on going you will get in!!

In a similar situation, graduating with a PE and tier 1 LO AM internships, and a few other less relevant elite work experiences. Been able to reach the interview stage a decent amount, including a few final stages, but can't seem to convert. Recruiting has been getting progressively harder since 2022 IMO and its getting to a point where it is starting to get me feeling down

Just touching base after your message, hope everything has been going better for you. Just got my dream offer in PC. Recruiting in London really picked up for me shortly after my message. Keep the grind up, the fact you are getting interviews in IB/PE/PC + have a BB offcycle and consistently reached final stages shows you got what it takes. Worse comes to worst, the next recruitment cycle opens up in a couple months.

Good luck bro keep up the grind
