Based on previous WSO threads, transitioning from a Fund of Funds (FoF) to Investment Banking (IB) is possible, but it may require strategic planning and additional steps. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Technical Skills:

    • You may need to bolster your technical skills, especially in areas like financial modeling and valuation, which are crucial for IB roles. Consider taking courses or certifications to enhance these skills.
  2. Networking:

    • Networking is essential. Connect with professionals in the IB industry, attend relevant events, and leverage any contacts you have from your previous IB experience.
  3. Recruiting Strategy:

    • Be flexible in your approach. Some groups or individuals within IB may have different opinions on the experience level required for lateral moves. Communicate your willingness to adapt and emphasize your desire to switch to IB.
  4. Deal Experience:

    • Highlight any relevant deal experience you have from your time at the FoF. Even if it's not directly related to IB, demonstrating your understanding of the deal process can be beneficial.
  5. Interview Preparation:

    • Prepare thoroughly for technical interviews. You may be asked about your LBO modeling experience or other technical aspects. Reviewing common technical questions and practicing your responses can help.
  6. Timing:

    • Consider the timing of your move. If you are currently in a FoF role, you might want to gain some experience before making the switch, but don't wait too long if your ultimate goal is to be in IB.

By focusing on these areas, you can improve your chances of successfully transitioning from a FoF to an IB role.

If you're talking about a Hedge Fund of Funds (investment management or portfolio management analyst position), then you have a near 0% chance going into IB. HFoF provides only qualitative skills with zero technical. HFoF jobs are not the worst, as their WLB is incredible (8:15am - 5:30pm) with almost 0 weekend work, but the trade-off is you have a really slowed career trajectory and are pigeonholed into that field. So only take that HFoF offer if you are o.k. with chill hours but not really doing much, pay is also kinda decent (75,000-80,000, +- 10,000 depending on location.
