FT recruiting

Hello, I will be a SA at a mid tier boutique this summer and was wondering about recruiting up as well as going into a different group. How have people in the past gone about this as I will be working in NY and want to stay there so I don’t want my bank finding out about this and ruining my return offer. When did you start networking again? Did you attach your resume/ mention your current bank? How did you juggle taking calls while working?

*I am also from a non target

Ah, the classic move of trying to swing from the vines of a mid-tier boutique to the skyscrapers of a top-tier bank in the concrete jungle of NY! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can navigate this urban finance safari:

  1. Timing for Networking: Start networking towards the end of your summer analyst stint. This gives you enough time to understand your current role and leverage that experience when talking to new contacts. Plus, it's a strategic move to ensure you've secured that return offer before you start looking elsewhere.

  2. Mentioning Your Current Bank: It's a delicate dance, my friend. You can mention your current bank in conversations to demonstrate your experience, but be cautious. When sending out resumes, you might want to leave out your current bank's name until you're sure the conversation is confidential and won't jeopardize your position.

  3. Juggling Calls: This is where you need to be as nimble as a monkey in the treetops. Schedule calls during lunch breaks, before or after work, or during any downtime you can find. Be discreet and always step out of the office to take these calls.

  4. Resume Attachments: When reaching out for networking, attaching your resume can be helpful, but make sure to tailor it to highlight relevant experience and skills for the group you're targeting.

Remember, while you're from a non-target, that's just part of your unique story. Embrace it, and let it show your determination and hustle. Swing through those networking events, and don't be afraid to reach out to alumni or use LinkedIn to make connections. Just keep it all on the down-low to avoid any unnecessary drama at your current gig.

And hey, if you need more detailed strategies or want to brush up on your networking and interview skills, the WSO Networking Guide is like a treasure map to buried Wall Street gold. Happy hunting!
