Fucked up in hiring process for taking too long in replying to MD

***posting on behalf of my girlfriend***

Hi Guys,

I am interviewing for an Associate position for a prestigious bank and after 8 interviews and 2 tests, I went on vacation to Europe. When I was there the MD emailed me in order to have a call regarding the process. As I had no service on my personal number, I gave him my work number which worked in Europe but I normally never use.

We talked and he said he would contact me again soon and that went really well for me and I should wait regarding updates.

I came back from vacation and stopped paying that much attention to my work phone, today I occasionally checked the phone and realized that yesterday he sent me an SMS in order to have a chat. I didn't answer him for more than 24 hours because I haven't seen the SMS until after.

Right after I responded the SMS and sent an email indicating my personal number and apologizing for the delay in getting back to him and I offered him to have a call whenever he is available.

Now he has not gotten back to me. I also saw that they promoted again the job in LinkedIn I was applying for.

Is it very serious what happened or might he understand? Did I lose my chances of being hired?

I am really concerned because it seems to me that I was the last candidate and I fucked up big time.
