Getting a boutique/MM internship from a non-target?

I'm planning on attending Michigan State since it's my cheapest option. Any advice on getting an internship at a boutique or mm firm and, ultimately, a job? I'm aware I should network, any advice on the specifics of networking? Also, I was planning on making money so that I could use it to travel to places like Chicago, New York, etc. during college to meet with alums. Is this a good idea to show more interest?
