I heard background checks just ask for employment dates from HR. It is reference checks that can reach out to past manager which may be against you.

Hoping someone else can opine on reference checks for SA, I know JPM contract asks for tutor checks but not sure how detailed.

That could work, but would they tell your manager and somehow he/she intervenes?

For example, you send it to person X who rates you highly but then X doesnt know as much compared to your manager and reaches out, which causes the manager to step in if he/she doesnt like you.

I am also in a similar situation although wasnt fired, hopefully reference doesnt kill me lol.

Depends on the reference check, if it is just generic like asking for a reference from any feasible source, then sure. But when I did my checks they asked for a contact for every internship I did so may conduct reference checks for all the relevant internships thus you may have to include the manager from your off-cycle.

I was referring to put someone in your off-cycle that wasn't your manager.

Can any senior monkeys opine on reference checks in this regard?

All they can ask is if the dates on the resume are accurate and if you're elgible for rehire or not. Absolutely correct that they can reach out to your listed references and your references can say whatever they want about you and it's on the HR person to give it any weight or not. Then again, if you're using references who wouldn't speak well of you...that's a different conversation you need to have. If it's a high turnover position with a large pool of applicants like SA I could see them only repeating the background check level of questions with references just like "Did they work for you? Would you want to work with them again?" kind of thing.
