Getting into project finance

Hey WSO,

Currently a new attorney in CA. I’m wishing to get into project finance. What would be some practical certifications or steps I can take to have a better chance that an employer would select me for a project finance analyst role? I’m willing to relocate for it, etc.

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some practical steps and certifications you can pursue to increase your chances of landing a project finance analyst role:

Certifications:

  1. CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst):

    • Demonstrates a strong understanding of investment management and financial analysis.
    • Highly regarded in the finance industry.
  2. CPA (Certified Public Accountant):

    • Focuses on accounting and financial reporting.
    • Useful for roles that require a deep understanding of financial statements.
  3. CFP (Certified Financial Planner):

    • Emphasizes financial planning and wealth management.
    • While not directly related to project finance, it shows a commitment to financial expertise.
  4. CFI FMVA (Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst):

    • Provides practical skills in financial modeling and valuation.
    • Highly recommended for roles that require financial analysis and modeling.

Steps to Take:

  1. Gain Relevant Experience:

    • Look for internships or entry-level positions in finance, even if they are not directly related to project finance.
    • Consider roles such as financial analyst, commercial credit analyst, or corporate finance analyst.
  2. Network:

    • Reach out to professionals in the project finance field.
    • Attend industry conferences, seminars, and networking events.
    • Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with people in the industry.
  3. Education:

    • Take finance-related courses, either through your current institution or online platforms.
    • Consider courses in financial modeling, financial statement analysis, and project finance.
  4. Leverage Your Legal Background:

    • Highlight your legal expertise in areas relevant to project finance, such as contract law, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
    • Emphasize how your legal skills can add value to a project finance team.
  5. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Practice answering common interview questions for finance roles.
    • Be ready to discuss why you want to transition from law to project finance and how your background makes you a strong candidate.

By following these steps and obtaining relevant certifications, you can significantly improve your chances of being selected for a project finance analyst role. Good luck!

Can you practice law within project finance ? Ive seen project finance lawyers move into banking teams at the VP level and above, where you are able to skip out on the modelling aspects.

Yeah ideally would be nice. I guess what I’m really saying is the struggle with getting that entry position to explain why I want to do it. I think the more reasons they see on my resume the better shot I’ll have.

As to what exactly that is I can put on my resume, is what I’m hoping to discover. Sort of as many certifications/banking related experience as possible
