Going into Finance without a Finance/Econ degree?
Hi all,
I'm a junior Communication major at Cornell University, and a newbie on this website. I used to be an engineer, ended up transferring within the university, and am now very involved in the academia/research aspect of comm (even though my previous internships usually involved PR/marketing). I've loved theoretical research thus far, but after speaking to friends and family who are investors, I'm intrigued to explore applied financial research. I'm taking a handful of finance courses this semester to strengthen my background.
This will be my last semester of university classes. This Fall I will be enrolled in an internship program in NYC, and then I will be graduating a semester early.
Although I have a superficial sense of the financial sector, I feel like I'm getting into this world way too late. I managed to score an interview at Morgan Stanley in Equity Research and at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, probably because of my strong research and engineering background. I haven't heard back from Morgan Stanley (had my interview Friday afternoon) but I did get the internship at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. I'd be working under two brokers, which isn't really 'research', but I feel like it may be a good stepping stone to get into the business. I understand because of my non-finance background I will probably have to get a Masters eventually, but I'd like to have a few years of experience under my belt. Smart choice to take the MSSB internship? Should I keep looking?
Any advice in getting more involved? Suggestions on just getting more experience? I'm still browsing for summer and fall internships. A few friends suggested that I look at some small- or mid-size firms for some exposure to research. Anyone know of any in NYC or Miami? Sorry for all the questions...thanks for the help!
Many analysts on Wall Street are not econ or finance majors.
