GS CIMD Internship>> Graduation Extended A Full Year >> GS IB Internship

Hi everyone. This summer I will be interning at GS within its CIMD but I ultimately want to do IB. I ended up picking up a master's degree so that I would have a Summer 2021 internship opportunity but the issue is that I told GS that I would graduate this fall. Would it look bad to tell GS that not only do I want to do IB but that I also will extend my graduation by a year? I'm going to be working hard for the return offer but I really would rather do IB. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you already committed to doing a Masters? Is this an MBA? An MSF? Also, are you a target or non target or diversity?

This is not what you want to hear but you fucked up big time. I would focus on damage control and making sure to not burn bridges, not lateralling/moving internally. Most likely, you will not be given a return offer because you were hired as an intern so you could start work after you graduated on time. There is a reason why internships happen in your Junior year, so that you can join the firm as a senior. Lying/changing your graduation date is a huge no no and if you have not told HR yet, wait until after your SA experience is over to do so because they would not hesistate to fire/renege on someone who is taking a potential Full Time hire place in their group. Again, do not let anyone in your firm know you are doing a Masters. KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT until after you start.

Some advice, it is not possible for you to try to get into IBD once your firm knows that you lied to get your job and will not be returning due to pursuing a masters degree. Why would they give you an offer for a team you will be joining 2 years later??

Right now, focus on the internship, be your best self, make connections, have a great experience, do not mention anything about the Masters, and when it comes time to get a return offer, either break the news if you have a good relationship with your recruiter/program manager or just deny the offer and go do the Masters.

Once you do the Masters, re-recruit and maybe reach out to the connections you made at your firm or re-recruit as a FT analyst at a different firm. HR does not forget.

I hope you did not accept/fully committ to a masters because you could simply go to GS over summer, network your ass off with the IBD team, and get a FT offer internally. Worst case scenario, you apply to a different firm as a FT IB analyst and you get the job you want. If you have accepted/committed to the Masters, just keep your mouth shut please. Do the internship,
