HOU to NYC to MF/UMM PE

Has anyone ever done this or could anyone relay any information from others?

I am an incoming 1st year at a top group in Houston with the goal of breaking into a really solid PE firm and then really solid B-school.

I assume that the best way to get MF or UMM looks would be to lateral in 6 months to 12 months to a top group in NYC to then recruit for PE. Anybody know otherwise? Also, any predictions on what the lateral market looks like in that time frame?
