HOW DO I NETWORK AS AN INTL?

As an international student how can I network with US IBs? Also I imagine constantly messaging them on LinkedIn would be inappropriate since IBs are already under so much stress. When would they have time to reply? How have you you guys networked to gain a job at a BB

I would never LinkedIn message, US citizen or otherwise. They’re under stress but you have to network some time, so it doesn’t hurt to send off an email and if they’re too busy they just won’t respond.

Network like normal with the knowledge that you’re international and some banks won’t sponsor.

There is nothing special about LinkedIn or email. I actually prefer LinkedIn to email. If you email me it gets lost in the shuffle, as I’ll receive it during the work day and ignore it or throw it away as I’m in the middle of work (even if I archive it somewhere I’ll most likely forget about it).

Also, bankers don’t need to be coddled. Don’t assume when they are or aren’t busy just reach out.

There is no difference if you are an international student in the way you network. It’s just that the universe of banks that you will apply to is smaller. The banks that sponsor don’t really care where you’re from - they will make you an offer if they like you. So reach out to alumni, work with the career center, talk to seniors at your school to get a first round.

Hit up other people from your home country or other international people in general via email. Target banks that hire internationals Most of the BBs don't for the analyst position now days

Why don’t BBs hire intls? I assumed they’d be the ones willing to sponsor

Focus on the employers who will sponsor next year or who are willing to take OPT staff without H1b. There are lists on WSO each year.
If you can't find a financial services employer willing to sponsor then either go into another industry, or find another solution like another degree, starting a business, etc.
Or find a job in finance for a non-profit, that would eliminate the H1b cap if they qualify.
H1b regulations are always changing, so read through them on the gov website.
